Interview

How was your first day at Daimler?

I was very excited and nervous on my first day, seeing that it was my very first internship. But I knew that I would be benefiting a lot from this internship. When I was introduced to all of my colleagues, my anxiety quickly subsided, because they really welcomed me with open arms. My team leader then showed me the various functional areas and told me more about my own job, which is very demanding. But this also serves as my incentive for applying my knowledge gained at university and learning even more on the job. I was really looking forward to the next six months. My internship is certainly challenging and exciting, that’s for sure!

What do you particularly value about your job today?

By being involved in various processes and projects I am now able to better understand what it means to work as a manufacturing engineer. I appreciate the chance of transferring my theoretical knowledge, learned at university, into practice. This internship enables me to see behind the curtains, to learn how an international company actually works and to be a part of it. And I am very happy that I am able to make a difference here in the development of Mercedes-Benz motor vehicles.

Please describe a typical working day.

My basic area of responsibility consists of the evaluation of geometric modeling. I pay particular attention to the aspects of flexibility, handling, modularization and quality. I then apply the results to a section of the body shell. This is great, because the results of my work can later be seen on the actual model.

What are your future career goals?

I would like to become a production manager in a leading international industrial company and thus influence future technical trends. But first I have to finish my studies and further improve my English-language skills. I am also thinking about writing my thesis on this subject. More than likely, I’ll be given the opportunity to do so right here, in the department where I am currently doing my internship.

What do you especially like at Daimler?

I like the constantly changing environment that I am working in as well as the fact that every individual is able to contribute to the success of Daimler. Despite or perhaps even because of its market leadership position, Daimler is always eager to launch technological innovations. I think that is very impressive.
