MB.OS is the "Next Big Thing".
Dr. Michael Hafner, Vice President MB.OS Base Layer & MBUX, explains in his interview, what makes MB.OS (Mercedes-Benz Operating System) the "Next Big Thing" and what Software-Experts can expect at Mercedes-Benz.
Dr Hafner, what is the Mercedes-Benz Operating System? And in what way would you see it as the "Next Big Thing"?
In the field of digitisation, we focus on the seamless integration and harmonisation of software and electronics This includes the development of innovative products and services aimed at customers' needs. The next big step in this regard is our internally developed operating system MB.OS as a direct interface for customer-experience features, which will become the basis for all future Mercedes-Benz vehicles as a unique and standard software platform. The MB.OS operating system will perfectly link the vehicles with the cloud and the IoT, and comprise four central domains: Powertrain, Autonomous Driving, Infotainment and Body & Comfort Systems.
The "Mercedes-Benz Electric Software Hub" is currently being developed for this purpose in Sindelfingen - the central campus for the development of MB.OS. What does this mean for the Sindelfingen site and the global R&D network?
With its more than 100 years of history, the Sindelfingen site will be strengthened further as the central campus for the development of the future MB.OS operating system in the company's global research and development network. The future "Mercedes-Benz Electric Software Hub" will play a central role as an integrating centre of competence for electric and electrified drives and digitisation. This offers a state-of-the-art working environment in an area of approx. 65,000 m² (about eight football fields), and will go into operation at the beginning of 2022. This means that in order to accelerate the transformation towards "Digital First", Mercedes-Benz AG is hiring around 1,000 software developers at its Sindelfingen site. Another 2,000 jobs are to be created in the global R&D network in the Tech Hubs such as Berlin, Tel Aviv, Seattle, Sunnyvale, Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Bangalore.
What job profiles are being sought in the context of this transformation?
We are looking for highly committed, talented IT specialists who are passionate about developing the most desirable vehicles in an agile team. These include programmers, system architects, and experts in battery development and driving assistance systems.
